At sixty-four, June Nash has perfected the art of house-sitting: keep the plants alive, feed the pets, don't get involved. Then she finds a diary hidden in a Victorian cottage in Willow Creek, Maryland.

The diary belongs to Betty, a seventeen-year-old who vanished in 1954. Her final words hint at escape, at secrets, at danger. Seventy years later, those secrets are still buried. And some people in this quiet town want them to stay that way.

With the help of a local librarian, June begins asking questions. But in Willow Creek, digging up the past can be deadly.
